After the issues with the transfer casing last month it was good to move on to assembling the other parts of the engine and fitting the short block and gearbox together. Labelling up a set of gearbox bolts saved me a lot of time hunting around. I stored them in little plastic bags, during the original strip-down, which meant the box could be quickly bolted to the inverted short block. This is one job where, if you rush, you could actually miss a bolt, and it's not easy to get to them at a later stage. With the short block now upright, I was able to fit new core plugs, using a socket to tap them into place squarely. I opted to add a small amount of thread lock to help them seal but, once the coolant is in the block, I'm sure they'll rust nicely closed too.
