Two types of SU fuel pumps have been fitted to carburettor-equipped Minis over the years. Mkl and Mk2 Minis were fitted with an electric fuel pump, which was mounted on the rear subframe under the car. When the Mk3 Mini came along in late 1969, it had a mechanical pump mounted at the rear of the engine block. Both types of pump are generally reliable in service but they can fail at high mileages and over time. Repairs are possible with some pumps - electric pumps can be dismantled and rebuilt with parts available from Burlen Fuel Systems and Mini specialists. Early mechanical pumps can be dismantled and cleaned and, provided that the gasket and diaphragm are OK, they should be fit for further service, but replacement parts are unfortunately no longer available. In the event of failure, new sealed pumps are available.
