Life has not been very pleasant during the past several years for the manufacturers of hard-disk drives and the magnetic disk platters used in them. Several factors have combined to create drastic declines in unit volumes, revenues, and of course profits since 1998. In the 1995-1997 period, between 60 and 70 percent of the total demand for magnetic disk platters was satisfied by merchant suppliers, specialized companies like Komag in the United States whose business was the development, production, and sale of these media.
