TOTAL FREIGHT moved on the UK rail network was 3.89 billion net tonne kilometres in 2020-21 Quarter Two. This was a 9% reduction on the same quarter last year and the lowest Q2 total since the time series began in 1998-99. One of the hardest hit sectors was aggregates, with reduced demand as many construction projects were slowed by the Covid crisis. Construction traffic fell by 0.11 billion net tonne kilometres compared to the same quarter last year. The market share of construction in the overall rail freight market remained the same at 28%. Intermodal, the largest sector by volume (43% of the market), took a 4.6% hit. Other, smaller, sectors were also down: oil and petroleum by 21.6%, metals by 6.7% and Channel Tunnel traffic by 30.2%.
