Three years ago, got my first taste of a V12 Vantage. It was the first time Aston Martin had shoehorned its biggest engine into its smallest car, but mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Fast-forward to today, when we get our first taste of Aston Martin's latest incarnation of the same vehicle, dubbed the V12 Vantage S. After three years, you expect some change to a vehicle, and Aston Martin has definitely changed the Vantage. The new Vantage S retains its striking good looks inside and out and is motivated by an even more powerful (by 55 hp and 37 lb-ft) V-12. The biggest change is the new transmission. When the V12 Vantage was introduced, you could only get it with a manual gearbox. Now you can only get the V12 Vantage S with a rear mid-mounted Sportshift III seven-speed automated manual with electronic shift-by-wire control. Aston Martin has added a three-stage adaptive damping system-Normal, Sport, and Track-which also adjusts power steering assistance. A Sport button on the center console adjusts throttle response, shift speed, and exhaust note.
