摘要

One of my favorite mantras when giving a lecture or being interviewed is "Technological progress comes from doing things differently in an unpredictable way. The future is not an extrapolation of the past." The context is usually related to an objection that aliens can't possibly visit Earth, so none are visiting. Usually, additional objections are along the lines that it would take too long or too much energy or they couldn't deal with the acceleration, etc. As an example, in physics department colloquia I give on campuses, I point out that, yes, 1G the acceleration associated with gravity at the surface of the Earth is 21 mph/ second. The answer I usually get when I ask for the acceleration at 1G is 9.8 meters per second squared. But that seems to be totally unclear. I then ask how long it takes at 1G to get to the speed of light. It is multiple choice and I give four choices: 1,000 years, 100 years, 10 years or one year. Almost nobody thinks it is only one year, which it is. In other words, a car accelerating at 1G in three seconds will be doing 63 mph and is a pretty hot car. It turns out that the amount of acceleration Earthlings can handle depends on several factors: the direction of the accelerating force on the body, the duration of the force, and the magnitude. Obviously, we can handle 1G for a very long time indeed. Perhaps the reader will have noticed that the astronauts are launched on their backs because they can stand more Gs back to front than foot to head. Testing on centrifuges show that a trained pilot can perform a tracking task while being accelerated at 14 Gs for two minutes. That is about 300 mph per second. It turns out one can stand 30 Gs for one second (That is 0 to 600 miles per hour in one second). Obviously, one isn't walking around drinking a beer while this is going on. Anybody familiar with reports of right angle turns by UFOs is aware that they don't slow down first and then accelerate. It is zip-zip.
