Organic materials have been found in space in different forms,including sugars,molecules that include carbon,and amino acids.Amino acids cintain the key elements of carbon,hydrogen,oxygen and nitrogen,along with other side chain elements, and are the structural units that make up proteins,which are the building blocks of life.There are twenty amino acids encoded in the genetic code of living organisms of Earth and these twenty are proteinogenic.There are non-proteinogenic amino acids that can be found in proteins that are formed after protein synthesis by a modification process,often essential for the function of the protein.In the search for life beyond Earth,identification of proteins in meteorites would give us important clues as to how life has developed.In 1983, a paper was published describing the amino acids found in the cabonceous chondrith Murchison meteorite(Cronin & Pizzarello,1983).The stable carbon isotopes of the indivedual amino acids found in the Murchison meteorite indicate an extraterrestrial origin for the amino acids.Further analysis of the meteorite has cinfirmed that these amino acids originated beyond Earth,and were not a result of terrestrial contamination (Engel & Macko,19970).But until now,proteins have not been identified or extracted from a meteorite.
