The national library of australia holds a collection of letters between Russell Drysdale (1912-1981) and Paul Haefliger (1914-1982), major figures in the Sydney art world in the 1940s and 1950s. Their correspondence began in 1957, while both artists were in Europe. We look back at this friendship in 2012, the centenary of Drysdale's birth. In 1957, Drysdale was living in London in a house in Ovington Street, Chelsea, painting pictures for his exhibition at the Leicester Galleries, to be held in April 1958. He was there not by choice but for family reasons, primarily because of his son Tim.
