摘要

In april 189I, my grandfather tom Hutcheson rode into the unionist camp on the outskirts of Hughenden, Queensland. Tom was just one of the thousands of shearers and bush workers on strike to maintain wages and conditions. Most of the strikers lived in well-organised camps that spread from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the New South Wales border. Although colonial Australia was accustomed to brutal frontier battles fought between Indigenous peoples and newcomers, only two armed insurrections between white settlers and government-backed forces occurred. The Queensland shearers' strike of 1891 is the lesser known of those rebellions. The other is the Eureka revolt of 1854. The relic of the miners' stockade is the Eureka flag. The Queensland shearers' legacy—a poem, a song and a tree.
