In 1438 the german goldsmith Johann Gutenberg (c.1398-1468) was secretly working on a technique described as werck der bucher (work of the books): the invention of printing by movable type. Gutenberg had borrowed a great deal of money from the lawyer Johann Fust (1400-1466) to finance the work. When he could not repay the loans, Fust foreclosed in 1455 and gained control of the invention, which by then was about to bear fruit with the publication of a magnificent Bible. Although Gutenberg had produced some minor works at an earlier date, this Bible (usually known as the 'Gutenberg Bible') is the work for which he is remembered, marking the foundation of the printing tradition in the Western world. The technique enabled rapid and consistent reproduction of text. It was efficient in its use of the type as, after printing one text or part of a large text, the type could be 'distributed' and used for other printing.
