Today security in Europe and across the world is challenged by a multitude of asymmetric threats. These include international terrorism, the proliferation of WMDs and the destabilising effects of regional conflicts and failing states. However, in spite of the changed threat situation as opposed to the Cold War era, NATO is still the anchor of Germany's security and defence policy and the central forum for trans-atlantic security dialogue. This transatlantic partnership and European integration complement one another.
