Xie Heping and his research group at Sichuan University have successfully developed a CO_2-mineralization fuel cell (CMFC) that generates electricity. This CMFC mineralizes carbon dioxide without consuming energy, whilst simultaneously producing electricity and industrially-valuable compounds. For every tonne of carbon dioxide, the technology can generate up to 140 kWh of electricity and 1.91 tonnes of sodium bicarbonate (worth between US$350-500 per tonne). In small- scale experiments, this CMFC system has demonstrated the ability to produce electricity in a stable manner with a maximum power output of 5.5 W/m~2, significantly higher than many current microbial fuel cells (0.01-0.530W/m~2), and with a voltage of 0.452V. Thus, this CMFC holds great promise for industrial application and economic benefit.
