Antibacterial resistance is a global crisis. Recent statements by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States emphasize the seriousness of the issue. Indeed, the World Health Organization has called on its director general to draft a global plan to combat antimicrobial resistance. Multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria, which are defined as bacteria that are resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics, are of particular concern given their broad range of resistance mechanisms and global reach. To highlight the scale of the problem, the Infectious Disease Society of America started the 'Bad Bugs, No Drugs' campaign and published a list of problem pathogens, which have become known as the ESKAPE species (Table 1).
