Advances in artificial intelligence have enabled machines to simulate evermore complex forms of human behavior. But some seemingly straightforward tasks still remain beyond their ability. "Computers are very good at calculation," says Atsuyuki Morishima, a professor at the Research Center for Knowledge Communities, "but ask them to identify whether a pair of images are similar or different, and they will have a hard time." In 2011, Morishima and his team combined the strengths of human and artificial intelligence in Crowd4U, a microtask-based crowdsourcing tool tailored to the needs of academics.
