Many biological processes are regulated on a rhythmic daily, or circadian, cycle. Highly expressed genes, such as those that regulate circadian rhythms, usually contain optimal codons to allow efficient expression. Now, two studies, from the laboratories of Carl Johnson and of Yi Liu, report that central circadian proteins in cyanobacteria and Neurospora, respectively, use non-optimal codons.
