Structural similarities between striated (skeletal) muscles in bilaterian animals such as humans and insects and non-bilaterians such as jellyfish, suggest a common origin. This phylogenomic study shows that core muscle proteins are present in unicellular organisms, such as sponges, that do not have true muscles. The data support a convergent model for the evolution of striated muscle, in which new proteins are added to the ancient contractile apparatus during independent evolution of cnidarian and bilaterians.
