When proliferating germline cells are removed from Caenorhabditis elegans, the roundworms live up to 60% longer than normal. David Vilchez et at now establish a possible mechanism. Worms with theglp-l(e2141) mutation lack a germline and reallocate resources to the soma, resulting in a sixfold elevation in proteasome activity, clearance of damaged proteins and increased longevity.
