Right now Singapore is a hot place for young scientists — both literally and figuratively. The country's median temperature of 30°C (80°F) provides respite from colder climates, and the average age of recipients for research grants is lower than in much of the Western world. Giulia Rancati, a principal investigator at the Institute for Medical Biology (1MB), based at the Biopolis research park in Singapore, was recently appointed by Singapore's lead agency for public sector research, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Rancati, who moved to Singapore four months ago from a postdoc at the prestigious Stowers institute in Kansas City, Missouri, tells Nature why the research climate in Singapore is favorable for young scientists.
