When Italian physicist Francesco Sannino was ready to move on from a postdoc at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, he sought to move back to Europe. He chose Denmark, largely because of the country's reputable tradition in physics. In the years since, he has experienced first-hand the challenges and rewards that Danish science can offer a foreigner. Sannino won international grants to establish a particle-physics group in Denmark. Initially, he had a Danish tenure-track associate professor position, but he didn't get tenure. Fortunately for Sannino, the University of Southern Denmark in Odense offered him a permanent professor position and welcomed his group.
