In a roadmap on nuclear energy published on 16 June, the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris asserted that almost a quarter of global electricity could be generated from nuclear power by 2050. The pace of new nuclear-plant construction is now slowly increasing, the roadmap showed (see chart). But in order to meet the lEA's 2050 target, around 30 new 1-gigawatt nuclear plants (or 20 larger ones) would need to enter operation each year during 2010-50, says the report.
