Preliminary data from US stock markets suggest that companies have already reduced their investments in research and development (R&D) following the economic crisis. More than 2,000 companies that filed quarterly reports with the US Securities and Exchange Commission reported an average reduction of 6.6% in their planned R&D spending in the first quarter of 2009.
