摘要

The repeated appearance and loss of a spot on the wings of fruitflies during their evolution is caused by mutations in one gene. This finding provides an unprecedented window on the genetics of convergent evolution. Similarities between species can arise in two ways: either each species has retained the trait in question from their common ancestor, or each has acquired it independently. Although the first possibility might seem far more likely, convergence is sufficiently common and detailed in its manifestations for more than one unwary biologist to have been duped.
