When Xueliang Song moved from northeast China to Japan 12 years ago, he was planning an orthodox research career at a university or a major corporation. But after Song earned his PhD in electronic engineering at the University of Tokyo in 2004, his lab head asked him whether he would like to set up a company based on his research. After mulling the idea over for a couple of days, Song decided it would be more fun than a conventional research career. "It sounded boring just to work at a big lab," he says.
