Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart are both well-established authors of popular science books, as well as being research scientists (in biology and mathematics, respectively) and aficionados of science fiction. Their new book focuses on the various possibilities of extraterrestrial life (normally associated with the emerging field of astrobiology), and on the relationship between science and science fiction. Both subjects have been heavily mined in the popular literature of late, so I admit that I was not initially enthusiastic about reviewing yet another book in these areas, but I felt that these authors' track records warranted at least a look.
