The $1.4-billion project to build the world's most powerful neutron source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee has fallen months behind schedule during its first year of construction, and faces major difficulties in obtaining funding for next year. The Department of Energy is scrambling to sustain support from the Congress for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the largest scientific facility that it has started to build since the abandonment in 1993 of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in Texas.
