Somehow it seems appropriate that John Daugman's first degree is in physics and philosophy. Now in the computing department at the University of Cambridge, he has in the past formed two companies, one hardware and one software, thus reconciling academic research and commerce. With a valedictory shipment of neurosci-entific instruments to the Amazon rainforest, Daugman is winding up his hardware company, a small enterprise that sprang from research into visual neuroscience and which he founded in 1984 while at Harvard. His second company, IriScan, opened in 1993. It licenses Daugman's algorithms for iris recognition which, because the iris remains unchanged throughout life and is unique to each individual, may replace existing ways of identifying people. The system springs from Daugman's basic research into neural computing, and investment bankers J P Morgan estimate the market value of the technology is now $ 100 million.
