In forests on hillsides, the trunks of the understorey trees may lean outwards from the slope, although the canopy trees are more vertical (Fig. la, overleaf). Two main theories have been put forward to explain this phenomenon — that it is caused either by the wind or by disturbances such as landslides. But in Proceedings of the Royal Society, Ishii and Higashi offer a new explanation, and they present data that are consistent with it from an evergreen forest on an island off the southern tip of Japan.
