Ancient hunters in southern Peru used spear points and knives made of volcanic glass (obsidian). We have located the source of the vast majority of this obsidian; a quarry on the slopes of the Cotallalli volcano in the south central Andes. Chemical analysis of obsidian from this source as well as of obsidian tools from Peru and Bolivia documents the use of Cotallalli obsidian throughout the south central Andes. Obsidian was the preferred material for stone knives, lance and arrow points, and other tools throughout the prehistoric world because of its predictable fracturing characteristics and sharp working edge.
