The recent activity of Mount Ruapehu, at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand, has given locals their largest eruptions in 50 years, their first taste of volcanic smog ('vog' to aficionados), and a sharp reminder that theirs is a peculiarly active part of the planet. Although the Ruapehu eruptions may have been spectacular, they are dwarfed in size and violence by numerous prehistoric eruptions which have occurred elsewhere during the 2-million-year history of the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). This zone, the topic of a recent set of review papers, represents the southernmost, continental portion of a roughly 2,800-km-long volcanic arc associated with the subduction zone which stretches northwards through the Kermadec Islands to Tonga.
