It is some measure of the current level of excitement in high-redshift galaxy studies that a single object could have been the subject of two press releases and some five papers in the past three months. The fascinating subject of all this activity was discovered as a Lyman-alpha absorption line (betraying the presence of hydrogen) at a redshift of 4.4 in the spectrum of the quasar BRI1202-0725 (refs 1 and 2).
