South Africa boosts funding for universities

The South African government has announced that it plans to increase spending on universities and 'technikons' — higher technical institutes — by more than 23 per cent next year. This represents an increase of R830 million (US$231 million) in its support for higher education. The move follows the determination of the coalition government led by the African National Congress, and expressed through the efforts of the Minister of Education, Sibusiso Bengu, to stop the downward slide in subsidies that has taken place over the past decade. Bengu, a former rector of the University of Fort Hare, is acutely aware of the problems that this has posed for the universities.
