One of the most remarkable processes occurring in the Earth is the circulation of sea water down subduction zones and back out of 'arc' volcanoes. Sea water is bound in hydrous minerals until the great pressure of subduction causes them to break down, letting the released water rise to the crust, dissolved in erupting magmas. This cycle is largely inferred from the wet crustal material we see entering the subduction zone at oceanic trenches and from the volatile-charged eruptions from arc volcanoes. The path in between, through the mantle, is unseen and still largely unknown. The reactions that bind and later release water from the downgoing slab, and the actual nature of the fluid phase — whether a hydrous silicate melt, a silica-rich hydrous fluid, or a saline fluid — are still debated. On page 237 of this issue, Keppler provides fresh evidence that salty water is the furtive fluid phase that accounts both for the melting that leads to arc volcanism and for the transport of trace elements that have long characterized the geochemistry of arc magmas.
