THE past two decades have witnessed remarkable advances in experimentalists' ability to study materials at the conditions of the Earth's deep interior, and on page 170 of this issue, Duffy and co-workers' report the latest such step -- the highest-pressure elastic-wave velocity measurements yet made for oiivine, thought to be one of the chief constituents of the Earth's mantle. But instead of reassuring us by refining the details ot well-established geophysical interpretations, the new data challenge our understanding of this region of the Earth.
