When the news of Rick Rosenthal's untimely and tragic passing reached our community, my predecessor Barry Nelson and the Editorial Board immediately conceived of the idea to create a focused issue in his memory, as a token of our appreciation for everything Rick stood for and contributed to our field, in general, and our journal, Naval Research Logistics, in particular. Rick had served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal from 1988-2003. He had set the standards and foundation upon which his successors, David Simchi-Levi, Barry Nelson and I have been trying to build. All three of us have been standing on Rick's shoulders.
