Reduction of the toner particle size is an effective way to achieve high-resolution images in electrophotographic laser printers, yet it causes a decrease in image density and increase in background fog. This paper describes the effect on image quality of an external toner additive during Nonmagnetic Single Component Development (NSCD) using a small-particle-size toner. It was experimentally clarified that toners which include a small-particle additive with a low dielectric constant such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) provide high image density as a result of a lowered toner charge-to-mass due to a decrease in charge on the toner surface and an increase in the toner mass per unit area on the donor roller. Regarding toners including PTFE particles, image density depends on the ratio of PTFE surface area to that of composite powder. This indicates that the toner charge per particle, q, is proportional to the square of toner particle size, d~2. Moreover, in toners which include PTFE particles, background fog depends substantially on the content of PTFE fines as demonstrated by the size distributions of PTFE particles and our novel toner preparation process, called the admixing-classification process. Balancing the mean size of PTFE particles, the fraction of PTFE fines in these should be reduced to obtain superior quality image with high resolution, high image density and low background fog.
