MTV is looking at ways to expand its MTV Flux social-networking service to new countries following steady growth since its recent launch in the UK. The service relies on its audience generating much of the content on the MTV Flux television channel by uploading video onto the related website and by voting to influence the scheduling of programmes and music videos. MTV is now assessing the best way take the concept forward and capitalise on the social networking phenomenon. The Viacom-owned broadcaster entered this arena having seen the likes of MySpace and YouTube capture the interest of younger audiences and thereby pose a competitive threat to the once trendy but now maturing MTV.
