Commercial television broadcaster TF1 claimed last week that it would be prevented from transmitting in high-definition format on France's digital-terrestrial platform. The company is complaining that the Conseil Superieur de l'Audiovisuel (CSA), the sector's regulator, is preventing free-to-air channels from launching high-definition television (HDTV) services. The company made the claims despite the government's official line that both free-to-air and paid-for high-definition channels should launch on digital-terrestrial television by mid-2006. Patrick Le Lay, TF1 chief executive, told financial analysts at a presentation last week on the company's first-half results that those responsible for France's digital-terrestrial legislation had effectively "closed DTT to the new TV [format]."
