A "tidal wave" of cancer is sweeping the world. New cases will rise 71 per cent from 14 million per year in 2012 to 24 million by 2035, warns the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It says vaccinating against cervical and liver cancer and promoting healthier lifestyles could prevent half these projected cases. NASA is being sued for refusing to investigate life on Mars. Rhawn Joseph of San Jose, California, filed the suit after an unusual object showed up in front of NASA's Opportunity rover. He claims the object could be a mushroom-like fungus. NASA says ifs just a rock. Abortion rates in the US are the lowest in 40 years, dropping to 16.9 per 1000 fertile women in 2011 from a peak of 29.3 in 1981. A steep drop of 13 percent between 2008 and 2011 could be due to wider use of reliable contraception methods, such as the coil, say the researchers involved.
