The increasing occurrence and damages of the field- and forest cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha and M. hippocastani) and related scarabs (Amphlmallon solstitiale, Phyllopertha horti-cola) in Germany have led to an increasing interest in these pest insects. Within this introduction to the meeting a historical overview on their occurrence in Germany and former control strategies are presented. Finally, the actual situation is discussed.%Das zunehmende Vorkommen von Feld- und Waldmaikäfer (Me-lolontha melolontha und M. hippocastani) sowie verwandter Arten (Amphimallon solstitiale, Phyllopertha horticola) in Deutschland und die damit verbundene Zunahme von Schäden durch Engerlinge haben diese Schädlinge wieder in den Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit gerückt.
