In the very heart of Taiwan lies a lush wilderness, embracing forests of spruce and cypress, home to rock monkeys and black bears. Yushan National Park-just a half day's jaunt from the city lights of Taipei by high-speed rail and bus-also boasts the island's loftiest peak, Mount Jade, whose beauty was recently recognised by the international New7 Wonders of Nature initiative. Hikers who make it to Mount Jade's 3,952 meter summit understand why: looking across the miles of mountain peaks on clear days and down upon a serene sea of clouds on misty ones is the thrill of a lifetime. And for backpackers and other adventurers traveling in Taiwan, there are a lot more thrills to come.
