Jennifer wohlenberg is just 22, but she can already tick off a lifetime's worth of contraceptive disappointments. She tried the pill, but couldn't stand the weight gain, the nausea, the yeast infection that lasted a year and a half. She and her husband, Brad, hated condoms —lubricated condoms, non-lubricated condoms, condoms with spermi-cide, condoms without spermicide, they all irritated her. After that, the alternatives dwindled rapidly. Diaphragm? Wohlen-berg finds even tampons painful. Norplant? She considered the implant sticks, "but then I read these stories about how you have to dig them out." Her mother had an 1UD scare, and two of her sisters got pregnant on the progestin-only minipill. So for now, she reluctantly uses the only method she feels is left: nothing. (Well, they do watch the calendar.) "It kind of puts a damper on your sex life," says the South Pasadena, Calif., marketing coordinator. "It's like being a teenager again, being scared of what will happen."
