The FAA has taken action as suggested by the NTSB and issued an Airworthiness Directive requiring ongoing inspections of Piper PA-31 T airplanes for signs of electrical arcing that could result in in-flight fires. The Safety Recommendation was issued January 5, 2017, and the FAA's AD came out over a month later. Electrical arcing from wiring to plumbing carrying hydraulic fluid, gasoline, jet fuel, or oil can be a potential hazard for any airplane where the wiring and piping are in such close proximity that chafing can cause physical damage, or where insulation has lost its integrity due to aging.
