To offer future multimedia mobile communication services over a wide area, communication satellites will need onboard large reflectors. The active phased array fully meets these requirements. An entire beam forming network (BFN) for a phased array must be equipped with a proportional number (number of beams times number of radiators) of amplitude and phase controlled functions. Two new technologies - an excitable 32-element active phased array MMIC and 3-D cross interconnection -are proposed to achieve small, lightweight, and low-power-consumption satellite onboard BFN equipment. An onboard BFN is designed and fabricated using these technologies.
