摘要

Modern human society attempts to improve Nature and natural processes by shaping the surrounding environment based our own circumstantial needs. Humans have an impact on the coastline since earliest times but it has been during the last two centuries (the time period termed Anthropocene) when reclamation of coastal areas has become, by far, the main factor affecting its geo-morphologic evolution. Coastal development for commerce,industry, settlement and tourism has increased enormously the pressure on this zone. At present with the changing climate, sea-level rise, and the expectable increase in storm frequency, the vulnerability of the coastal areas is becoming a matter of growing social and economic concern. This level of conflict between Nature and human activities demands a coastal management supported by scientific knowledge of the processes operating on the coastal areas and the possible consequences that the human activities have on those natural processes. It is evident that without humans the coastal zone would not require any management at all.
