Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has recently concluded that his country has proven reserves of 150tcf onshore and 30tcf offshore, would invest $18 billion to expand gas production to 11 bcfd and possesses 80% of South America's gas reserves. In addition, Venezuela plans to increase oil production from 3.2 million b/d to 5 million b/d by 2012. However, figures from OPEC show that the level claimed by Chavez is not realistic as OPEC reduced Venezuela's ceiling by 24% to 2.47 million b/d.
