My oceanographic career path was totally unconventional. As a child I was an avid shell and fossil collector, combing the beaches of North Yorkshire where Jurassic/Cretaceous sediments erode and spill their treasures onto the shore. This area was home to my hero Captain Cook, and I spent many happy hours in the Whitby Museum viewing artifacts from his fantastic voyages. Little did I know that I was later to follow in his wake around the global ocean. Initially, my teenage equine interests led me astray, as I majored in animal science, leading to a Ph.D. in animal physiology.
