1. After remaining under pressure April, the product tanker market weakened further in May. Average clean MR spot earnings fell to the lowest level in a year, declining 13% m-o-m to $8,672/day, whilst average spot earnings in the Handy and Dirty sectors both softened marginally m-o-m. 2. Product tanker demand is currently anticipated to expand by a steady 2.6% in 2018, a marginally slower pace of growth to 2017. Firm growth in products trade between the USG and Latin America is expected, particularly due to rising exports to Mexico and Venezuela. Shipments to these two countries from the US grew by almost a third y-o-y in Q1 2018, and this trend is expected to continue in the full year due to inadequacies in the two countries' refinery sectors. Steady growth in products trade is expected on a variety of other routes, although imports into some developing nations, particularly in South East Asia, could be negatively impacted by the recent rise in global oil prices.
