The newbuild market had a quieter month than in January and February, with 7 contracts placed compared to 22 in January and 10 in February. The newbuilding price fell by $0.5m m-o-m to $52m in March. In March the secondhand market was active with 19 sales reported. The market price for a 5-year-old, 47,000 dwt vessel held steady compared with the February price at $47m. The price for a 10-years-old, 30,000 dwt vessel also remained steady on a m-o-m basis at $37m. Three tankers were sold to breakers in March as activity in the demolition market picked up across all tanker sectors. Offsetting the demolitions, 0.4m dwt of deliveries were made in March, meaning the fleet grew to 85.2m dwt.
