The International Olive Council's technical activity programme for 2005 included organising two consecutive international courses in Syria last year. The first one was arranged on table olive processing. Held in Damascus from 20 to 27 November it wasa joint initiative of the International Olive Council, represented by M. Sbitri, M. Rappou and G. Mattiacci, and the General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research (GCSAR), represented by S. Makhoul. Trainees were from institutions or businesses in a string of Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Cyprus, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Tunisia), with a strong local representation from Syria.
