Carrying out hovertes+s, hence w'rthout wind in a wind tunnel, may seem a contradiction in terms, but it is justified by the importance of hovering flight for a helicopter, and by the ability of the existing wind tunnel measurement systems to acquire large quantities of blade-rela+ed data.Such tests were carried out in late 2005 in the SIMA, as part of DPAC studies with the blades of the RPA (Active Flap Rotor). The rotor was tilted by 90° in order to limit wall effects (see figure 1 in the article on RPAtests), and ro+or rotation coupled with increasing collective pitch generated an increase of massflow through the rotor. In the absence of an obstacle downstream of the rotor, this air flowed around the whole aerodynamic circuit before returning to the rotor, simulating climbing flight.
